My Secret Belay Trick (Advanced)
Переглядів 7 тис.Місяць тому
Hey everyone one this is trick is situational for sure and I don't think it should be used in every situation. Belaying has a lot of nuances, perhaps you want more slack, this is why it is an advanced technique. You are going to have to make the right call if this is something that can/should be used. If there was a possible grounder and I had to take in slack very quickly id pull this one out....

    I actually hate that my static top rope setup doesn't let me drop and reattempt stuff... But I'll be buggered if I'm trashing my dynamics with my ascender. Maybe I'm doing it wrong or something, but for the amount of TRS i do, my rope gets trashed pretty fast.

    Last time I watched ur video was for rope soloing. It’s always been a dream of mine to ride my motorcycle to climb, funny how that’s brought me here again. Props to the shared vision! Love the concept of these. Could see these as an addition to but not replacement of foam unfortunately. Wonder how they’d hold up on uneven landings.

      Right on, we’ll when you show up with a group like I did you usually have a bunch of different types of pads to mix things up which is nice. Yeah uneven wasn’t to bad but I wouldn’t want to plop it on top of anything sharp or poky lol

    Make it $75 and give it aramid or thick nylon casing w/ straps and I’m completely sold.

  • @justtheone5168

    Yeah price is absolutely the worst part about this thing it seems. Maybe I am missing something, but the current price seems wildly inflated (pun intended) for a glorified air mattress. I understand it is made with more durable material, but air mattresses are CHEAP. Even if this thing was magic, I wouldnt spend $200 for it. I’d rather get a trifold at that point.

    If they can implement your suggestions and get some different sizes, I would definitely buy a few, depending on price. My only other thing that I would gave wanted it a way to lock the paid together but I see they already have a solution for that on their website. Durability would me my main concern at the current price.

  • @jeremyatill
    @jeremyatill 6 днів тому

    Would be afraid of the bounce for sure. Curious if the weight/bounce would cause the pad to slide out from under you on an uneven surface or bounce you off the side. Seemed like low weight plus texture made the friction small enough that it slid away very easily. Also would it break your ankles if you land standing up on it. Even if it could only be used on perfect landings I'd pick up a couple at a more reasonable price.

  • @kentcowthe
    @kentcowthe 6 днів тому

    First, Get an electric pump. They cost nothing these days and do wonders. Second, I am not sure how these mats are constructed but I want to see something similar to the sleeping pads Seatosummit makes, which is auto inflatable and combination of solid foam and air.

    • @dereinzigwahreRichi
      @dereinzigwahreRichi 6 днів тому

      That would be equally heavy to a traditional crashpad (or at least almost) and really bulky, too, if it's built sturdy enough. I once had a 4" (10cm) thick one of these self inflating pads and it was a monster when rolled up and a pain to get it that way. There's hardly any advantage to be had with that kind of construction.

    • @chaosengine4597
      @chaosengine4597 6 днів тому

      Autoinflation on sleeping pads is a myth and has some drawbacks.

    • @dereinzigwahreRichi
      @dereinzigwahreRichi 5 днів тому

      @@chaosengine4597 absolutely right, it only works to a certain degree, you need to blow some additional air into it. And it only works well if you don't store those pads compressed at home, which means inflated in that case. Otherwise the foam looses its loft (springiness).

    Personally I would not like the bounce factor, foam absorbs the shock of a fall better where air rebounds. They could work well to build up a base though and then cover with traditional pads

    The thing is if I didnt read the description thoroughly (they warn its not for climbing at the very end or in smaller font) and just glanced at it and weren't interested in the physics behind climbing or inform myself on safety standard I would have just bought everything from amazon. My logic was how hard could it be to manufacture aluminium and nylon that I couldnt trust chinese products with it and what do asians use for climbing tools, it can't be only european and american brands that make quality stuff. I'll only use the carabiner to carry stuff around and never to anchor myself to them, the sling can be usefull in many way, but yeah I decided to buy all my stuff from climbing store and certified gear only because everything on amazon seems too sketchy. Most of their products in their climbing section have warning to not use them for climbing especially their top sellers, its absurd

    I don't think you should do this with a tube though. My guess is, if your rope hand is still up there while the rope engages to the fall, in that moment the rope will go right back through the tube, because the rope hand is not under the device line. With the usual method the rope hand goes above the device for a split second; with the demonstrated method it stays above the device line for quite some time, creating a larger time window where the tube doesn't brake, possibly even sucking your hand into the device.

    At 3:05, it really looks as if the belayer totally loses control, and may even have let go completely before he hits the ground, and the last piece in has no slack, suggesting belayer error in the end.

    I realize this is a relatively old vid, but it's absolutely accurate. As well as being enjoyable to watch. Both of those knots/hitches have saved my a** more than once. I recall getting to the top of 4 pitches in Seneca Rocks, WV, and discovering my partner had forgotten to take my second "new-fangled" ATC. I gave her mine. (It was the first time we'd climbed together. She had been belaying me from a hip belay which she was perfectly competent to do. And this was back "in the day," when some people preferred that method. I'm an old fart, still climbing at 80, though my son leads these days.) Anyway, I ended up rappelling 4 pitches, about 550 feet, with a Munter & was really happy that my climbing instructor (another woman, BTW) had the foresight to teach us that, among several other knots you don't use every day, but are very useful when you need them.

    Petzl makes biners with tiny holes specifically for this application. Though the device paired with said biner also needs a hole. Strange the grigri family doesn't. The nanotraxion does however.

  • @andm6847
    @andm6847 25 днів тому

    So I have to find a glove and put it on first ;-) But seriously, you would need to know where the rope on the ground is, the ground would have to be flat enough to step onto the rope and you can see the belayer missing the clip. If you don't manage to block the rope between your shoe and the ground, you would end up with the brake hand lose on the rope, the grigri unweighted and not in blocking mode, you pulled in less than 4 ft and your hand is all the way up high. It takes extra time to pull in more rope in case the climber falls a second later. Not sure I would make that correct call in time. More likely I would see there is a problem and I step back or sit/kneel down to the ground while pulling in to take more than 4ft slack out of the system.
